That statement probably has you pondering.
What would you consider to be the best medicine of all?
Many people would say antibiotics.
They’ve saved lives, but they have also been way overprescribed. As a result, they have destroyed many gut microbiomes and spurred the development of “Superbugs” that resist even our strongest antibiotics and can pose a threat to your life.
Others may say proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). In fairness, these drugs do what they’re supposed to—stop stomach acid from rising up into your throat and causing heartburn.
But they do this by shutting down your stomach’s ability to produce acid!
This destroys your digestion (because acid is needed to break down proteins); reduces nutrient absorption (increasing your risk of fractures); weakens your immune function (due to the impact on the gut microbiome from poor digestion); and increases your risk of heart attack and kidney disease (because poor digestion stirs up inflammation).
And please, don’t even mention statins or I’ll jump out the window. This blog would be a book if I were to list all the dangers of shutting down your liver’s ability to make cholesterol just so you fit in the right place on some arbitrary chart.
Then what IS the best medicine of all?
The best medicine of all, my friend, is to teach people how NOT to need it.
And that is why I do what I do.
When you take measures to support optimal health, you are naturally decreasing your chances of developing a sickness or disease and lessening your need for medications!
Now, there will always be times where medications are necessary and appropriate, but trust me, we have gone WAY overboard and have thrown healthy habits to the wind while we pop our daily meds and wait for them to create false health for us.
If you truly want to get on the road to a healthier you and minimize your chances of needing medication to begin with (or possibly eliminating them if you currently take some), it’s not rocket science.
Here are four important steps you can take:
Step 1: Remember you are what you eat
If you eat junk, you can count on living a sickly, medicated existence—it’s a given.
What has worsened our nutritional ignorance is that many doctors to this day tell patients that their diet doesn’t matter. That’s as ridiculous as saying it doesn’t matter if you put gas in your car—it should be able to run just fine with Coca-Cola in the tank instead.
But the great thing is no matter where you’re starting from, eating better foods will definitely have a positive effect on your health!
The more you gravitate toward wholesome real foods, the more your body will thank you with things like less constipation, gas and bloating, and more energy.
Eventually as your body becomes “cleaner” and properly nourished, you can also see things like better sleep, fewer aches and pains, clearer skin, improved moods and even lower blood pressure.
The easiest and best diet advice I can give you is to stick to proteins, fresh vegetables and healthy fats in your meals, and stay away from starches and sugars (that includes soda).
You’ll see a dramatic improvement in your digestion and will likely lose some excess weight without even trying.
Step 2: Supplement appropriately
Very few supplements are needed by everyone. Our biochemical individuality (our body’s own unique needs and circumstances) makes us different so not everyone has the exact same needs.
That being said, there are two supplements that are the exceptions to this rule and are right for just about everyone:
Probiotics and Vitamin D.
Probiotics
Probiotics like Super Shield multi-strain probiotic formula are universally helpful because we ALL face challenges to our gut microbiome balance which can in turn hamper our digestion and impair our immune system functioning—two things that have a major impact on our health from head to toe.
And Super Shield’s full-spectrum formula provides a whopping g 13 strains of well-studied, potent bacteria that are up to the challenge of supporting YOUR gut health.
Vitamin D
Over the last few decades, we’ve been brainwashed into thinking the sun is nothing but a skin cancer-causing monster and we slather on sunscreen every time we go out in it.
As a result, our bodies have not been able to make Vitamin D like they should (because sunscreen blocks the skin’s Vitamin D production), so most of us have a degree of deficiency (which actually increases your cancer risk—how’s that for a kicker?).
In addition, sunlight is limited in the northern hemisphere this time of year, so that impacts Vitamin D levels as well.
Vitamin D is definitely NOT something to be without!
That is, not if you want the protection of your immune system against infections and viruses (including COVID), prevention of cancer and autoimmune disease, taming of allergies and asthma, strong bones, sharp mental health and a healthy cardiovascular system.
But you can help ensure that you consistently maintain health-supporting levels of this crucial nutrient with Optimum DK Formula with FruiteX-B.
Optimum DK Formula provides a therapeutic 5,000 IUs of Vitamin D3 in every capsule, along with its partners Vitamins K1 and K2 and the mineral boron.
Step 3: Move on a regular basis
Now don’t grunt at me.
The fact is, you must get some form of exercise if you want any chance of staying disease and medication-free.
But you don’t have to run a marathon or pump iron at the gym! Even brisk walking counts.
There are also many DVD and TV programs you can work out with in the comfort of your own living room.
If your mobility is limited, yoga has been shown to help flexibility and fitness. Swimming is another good choice if you are looking for low-impact activities.
The important thing is, just do something. Your body will thank you handsomely!
Step 4: Look for natural healthcare options
There are many wonderful options out there to help with various aches, pains and physical challenges that don’t involve medications!
Here are some to consider:
- Physical therapy
- Acupuncture
- Chiropractic care
- Hypnotherapy
- Naturopathy
- Meditation
- Massage therapy
- Biofeedback
- Infrared sauna
I personally credit physical therapy, acupuncture, chiropractic care and infrared sauna for making it possible for me to still be doing full-impact karate as a 4th degree black belt at age 59.
Get going now and help increase YOUR chances of a medication- and disease-free life!
That’s the best medicine of all!
To your health,
Sherry Brescia
Brilliant and to the point as usual. Beauty in simplicity and truth.
I would like to see you address long Covid as there seems to be no cure at present. But I think eating certain foods and taking certain vitamins would help. We long haulers need help! It is devastating not knowing how we will be feeling from one day to the next.
Thank you Sherry. I love your blog and get such great information out of it. As a 59 y/o, I love to get outdoors and exercise and love being out in the sun. I also love to cook and have been “trying” to eat a healthier diet. I can tell the difference when I do.
One item you did not mention is proper breathing. By following a simple breathing exercise, I have reduced my anxiety levels and decreased my need for blood pressure meds. I applaud your other suggestions. Have been reading your email for years.
