There’s an old saying that goes, “If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.”

Those wise words are especially pertinent to the latest “Holy Grail” of the weight loss world.

Semaglutide!

Semaglutide is the active ingredient in the diabetes drug Ozempic. It is also an ingredient in Victoza—another diabetes medication, and the weight loss drugs Wegovy and Saxenda.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you undoubtedly know or have seen someone who has used semaglutide injections and dropped a considerable amount of weight.

Woo-hoo! Sign me up!

Not so fast.

Because just like virtually every other drug in existence, semaglutide has a very dark side, and although it may help you drop pounds, it can open a can of worms in terms of serious side effects.

Here’s what I mean:

How it “works”

Semaglutide mimics a hormone that naturally occurs in your body and helps control blood sugar and insulin levels.

That’s why it was originally designed for people with Type 2 diabetes.

In addition to affecting insulin, it can also influence your nervous system, leading to an appetite-reduction response. However, one of its effects includes delayed gastric emptying, meaning the passage of food through your stomach is slowed way down. 

This in turn can make you eat less food, stop eating sooner and/or feel fuller longer…and that, my friend, translates to weight loss.

But it doesn’t stop there, and the rest of the story is not so pretty. Here are some of the…

Serious side effects of semaglutide

Delayed gastric emptying is characteristic of a condition called gastroparesis.

Gastroparesis literally means "paralyzed stomach.” When your stomach can’t carry out its job like it should, that can lead to gas, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, vomiting and nausea, which are reported side effects of semaglutide.

In addition, research from the University of British Columbia revealed that these injections are associated with an increased risk of not only stomach paralysis, but also pancreatitis and bowel obstruction—both of which have the potential to be fatal.

Other possible side effects include gallbladder problems, kidney problems, serious allergic reactions, increased heart rate and even suicidal thoughts.

There is also a warning in the package insert literature for people with a history of certain thyroid cancers against taking the medication.

Oh, and by the way, once you stop taking the injections, you’ll likely gain back all the weight you lost.
