That question probably grabbed your attention.
What do you think is the best medicine of all?
Many people would say antibiotics. It’s true that they’ve helped to kill dangerous bacterial infections, but they have also destroyed our gut microbiomes (making us more susceptible to illness) and spurred the development of “Superbugs” that resist even our strongest drugs and can be life-threatening.
Others may say proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). These drugs “work” by shutting down your stomach acid so it can’t come rising up into your throat. But this also impairs your digestion (because acid is needed to break down proteins), reduces nutrient absorption (increasing your risk of fractures) and makes you more susceptible to food borne illness (that your stomach acid would ordinarily kill if it weren’t shut down).
Plus PPIs increase your risk of heart attack, chronic kidney disease and dementia too!
And please, don’t mention statins or I’ll jump out the window. This blog would be a book if I were to discuss all the dangers of crippling your liver’s ability to make cholesterol.
So what IS the best medicine of all?
The best medicine of all is to learn how to NOT need it in the first place.
When you take measures to create a better state of health in your body, you are naturally decreasing your chances of developing a sickness or disease and ultimately lessening your need for medications!
Now, there will always be times where medications are appropriate, but trust me, we have gone WAY overboard and have thrown healthy habits to the wind while we pop our meds and wait for them to create false health for us.
Oh, and when side effects pop up (which they undoubtedly will), there are other meds to address those too.
Listen, if you want to get on the road to real health and lessen your chances of needing medication, it’s not rocket science.
Here are the steps you need to take:
Step 1: Remember you are what you eat
If you eat processed junk, you can count on living a sickly, medicated existence—it’s a given.
What has worsened our nutritional ignorance is that many doctors to this day know next to nothing about a healthy diet.
My sister’s doctor once told her that if she wanted to lose weight, she merely had to eat fewer than 1,500 calories a day. He told her she could even eat nothing but Cheetos if she wanted—as long as it was under 1,500 calories.
I’m not joking.
But the great thing is no matter where you’re starting from, eating better foods will have a positive effect on your health!
The more you gravitate toward wholesome real foods, the more your body will thank you with things like less constipation, gas and bloating, and more energy.
Eventually as your body becomes “cleaner” and nourished, you can also experience things like better sleep, fewer aches and pains, clearer skin, improved moods and even lower blood pressure!
If you need guidance on how to enjoy a healthy yet delicious diet, check out my Great Taste No Pain health system.
In addition to living up to the “Great Taste” promise by giving you a collection of delicious recipes, Great Taste No Pain shows you how to pair your foods together in your meals to promote smoother, more efficient digestion.
And that means goodbye acid reflux, IBS, and much more!
Now, if weight loss is your main goal, my Want to Lose Weight? Stop Dieting! program can help.
In addition to the same food pairing guidance as in GTNP, you’ll also get sound advice on how to choose an exercise activity that’s right for you, and how to eliminate many sneaky, hidden factors that may be preventing you from losing weight and/or causing you to gain weight.
Or lastly, if you prefer a one-on-one conversation with me where we can discuss all your concerns and get you on the road to better eating, book a coaching session with me! I promise it will be fun and I’ll do my best to help you.
Step 2: Supplement appropriately
Unlike medications which merely mask symptoms and/or interfere with your body’s natural functioning, supplements are meant to support the body’s processes and help it achieve and maintain a strong state of health.
Since we are all different, our needs will be different too! Here are some examples:
Better BMs and immune health
Probiotic formulas like Super Shield and Super Shield PLUS are pretty universally helpful because we ALL face challenges to our gut microbiome which can in turn hamper our digestion and impair our immune system functioning—two things that have a major impact on your health from head to toe.
Acid reflux and heartburn
If you’re frequently troubled by acid reflux and heartburn and regularly pop Tums or PPIs, Digestizol Max digestive enzyme formula can help turn that around! Digestizol Max can pinch hit alongside your body’s own enzyme reserves and naturally pave the way for better digestion and no more acid reflux.
Aches and pains, high blood pressure
If aches and pains are your concern and you take NSAIDs, or you’re on dangerous meds for high blood pressure or cholesterol, a deficiency of Omega-3 fats (and the resulting inflammation) may be the culprit behind your problems, and all the meds in the world won’t change that.
But a pure Omega-3 fish oil formula like VitalMega-3 can help by addressing the root cause of your problem. VitalMega-3 provides the soothing, anti-inflammatory fats that your body desperately needs to control inflammation.
Autoimmunity, allergies, bone health
In addition to building strong bones, Vitamin D helps to tame the inflammatory immune reactions associated with autoimmune conditions (like lupus, Crohn’s, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, etc.) as well as allergies, and it protects against cancer and heart disease too!
Unfortunately, Vitamin D deficiency is rampant in our society today, largely due to our (exaggerated) fear of skin cancer and avoiding the sun or using sunscreens.
Plus sun exposure is naturally limited this time of year in the northern hemisphere.
To ensure your body maintains a health-supporting level of this crucial nutrient, Optimum DK formula with FruiteX-B is your ticket!
Optimum DK formula provides 5,000 IUs of Vitamin D3, as well as vitamins K1 and K2 and the mineral boron, which work together to protect you and support proper immune reactions.
Step 3: Move on a regular basis
Now, don’t grunt at me!
Face the fact that you must get some form of exercise if you want any chance of staying disease and medication-free.
But you don’t have to run a marathon or start a gym membership! Even brisk walking is beneficial.
There are also programs you can use in the comfort of your own home.
If your mobility is limited, yoga has been shown to help improve flexibility and fitness. Swimming is another excellent choice if you are looking for low-impact activities.
The important thing is, just do something. Your body will thank you handsomely!
Step 4: Look for natural healthcare options
There are many wonderful, effective options out there to help with various aches, pains and physical challenges!
Here are some to consider:
- Physical therapy
- Acupuncture
- Chiropractic care
- Naturopathy
- Meditation
- Massage therapy
- Biofeedback
I personally credit acupuncture and chiropractic care for making it possible for me to still be running long distances and doing full-impact martial arts at age 61.
Don't be a regular at the pharmacy
Although medications are unavoidable in some cases, they are not always the only or best answer or even necessary.
See what a difference you can make when you help to create health instead.
