When this happened, I saw stars!

Important announcement regarding office hours at the end

Please DO NOT skip

If you’ve been reading my blogs for a while you probably know that I can be considered a “fitness nut” LOL.

And there’s a good reason for that!

I have worked out my entire adult life and I cannot stress enough the incredible health benefits from my exercise habits—including normal blood pressure, easily maintaining my weight, sound sleep, combatting stress and high energy levels among other things.

But alas, there are inherent risks with physical activity and sooner or later, most athletic people will face the day when they will be injured in some way.

My day arrived 2 weeks ago.

Here’s what happened:

A collision with an elbow

I was in my martial arts dojo two weeks ago enjoying all the drills and calisthenics and then it came time to spar—one of my favorite parts of class! We all suited up with our helmets, gloves and shin guards and matched up with our fellow classmates.

I was working with a very dear friend of mine having fun exchanging punches and kicks. Then all of a sudden, I went to kick her, and she moved her arm to block, but her elbow slid under my shin guard and nailed my shin!

I saw stars when it first happened and felt a jab of intense pain. But it subsided, so I continued the match and the rest of the class.

My leg was a little red that night, but I didn’t think anything of it.

Then I woke up the next morning and it looked like I had a plum protruding out from my leg.

In case you need a visual, here it is:

EEEEEEK!

After having an evaluation, x-ray and ultrasound, I was told that I have not just an ordinary bruise, but a “bone bruise on steroids.” (My doctor had a good sense of humor.)

Oh, happy day. Now what do I do?

Answer: Follow my own advice.

My treatment plan

I of all people know that there is some SERIOUS inflammation going on here, so I need to settle that down. But of course, I want to do it naturally, since I am also well aware of the dangers of NSAIDs.

Plus, my body more than ever needs a sound supply of nutrients right now that are especially helpful for healing bones—especially vitamins A, C, D, and K, zinc and chromium.

So here is my treatment plan:

Health always starts with your diet first, and I’m no exception to that rule.

My eating habits have always been quite healthy, but now I am concentrating on bone broth (from my homemade chicken soup), fish (especially salmon with its anti-inflammatory omega-3 benefits), beef and poultry, and loads of fresh vegetables, both in salads and cooked.

I also (begrudgingly) have been sidelined from MMA classes until this thing heals up.

You have no idea how much that is bugging me, but I’ve got to allow my leg to heal and not stress it out any more than it already is. So, I’ve just been working forms and hand strikes and doing sit-ups—things that don’t involve my poor sore leg.

My supplement regimen

As far as supplements go, our Optimal Turmeric Blend and Super Core multi-vitamin and mineral formula have been my companions for this injury.

Optimal Turmeric Blend

In several head-to-head studies, turmeric has outperformed ibuprofen for joint pain and function scores (while presenting far fewer negative side effects).

Not only does it reduce oxidative stress via its antioxidant effects, but it also reduces inflammation in osteo-cartilaginous (bone) tissue.

With over 10,000 published articles in peer-reviewed journals, turmeric has truly made an undeniable mark in the world of disease prevention and reducing inflammation.

It's also a potent natural pain reliever!

A study conducted of injured rugby players showed that turmeric is more beneficial than NSAIDs and over the counter pain killers for injury recovery.

Plus, other research suggests curcumin mobilizes stem cells, which even surgical interventions for injury repair can’t offer.

Whew!

Super Core multi-vitamin and mineral formula

While I am likely getting a decent level of supportive nutrients for injury recovery from my diet, as I’ve mentioned before, our food supply is not as nutritious as it once was…so I may be falling short in some areas.

Plus, I believe my body may have additional needs over and above the RDAs to help with the additional challenge of healing my leg!

Super Core provides a thorough array of essential nutrients including all of the ones I mentioned above that are important for injury repair.

Plus, it has natural sources of antioxidants and anti-inflammatories which will also assist in the recovery process!

I know how you feel

I hope my story has resonated with many of you, and if you are hurt or injured right now, I know how you feel!

But our bodies are an incredible creation whose natural state is that of good health! We just need to safely and naturally support its efforts and help to minimize the harmful factors that are all around us.

To your health and healing,

Sherry Brescia

  • I am so sorry that happened to you. I hope you are healing up well! I’m sure you are with all that you do to take care of yourself. Seven years ago I broke my femur just above the knew, spiral fracture, on a simple little turn on a bike route. Never mind the fact that I would ride the Wasatch Crest trails here in Utah other times and all was always good. Having a good health routine most of my life was truly a benefit! I wish you the best and thank you for all the information you research for us.
